Lauryn Hill Sentenced To Three Months In Prison

Tuesday, 07 May 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

American singer-songwriter Lauryn Hill has been sentenced to three months in prison, after evading over $1million in taxes over the past ten years.

Although she avoided a potential three year prison sentence last month, she’s now facing three months in the slammer - as well as a $60,000/£39,000 fine, an extra three months in home confinement, and a year’s parole supervision.

The Associated Press reported that Hill has commented:

“I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them. I had an economic system imposed on me.”

Hill went on to slam the way the entertainment business treated her, saying:

“There were veiled threats, there was blacklisting. I was told, 'That's how it goes, it comes with the territory.' I came to be perceived as a cash cow and not a person. When people capitalize on a persona, they forget there is a person in there.”

The news comes just weeks after she revealed that she’d be releasing new music for the first time since 1998, having penned a new, $1million deal with Sony Music - you can read more about that here.
