Alt J To Take On New Style For Second Album?

Wednesday, 22 May 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Indie-rock stars Alt-J have revealed that their next studio album may see them taking a change in direction - after working on a new film soundtrack inspired them create ‘more free’ music.

The quartet received a prestigious Ivor Novello award for their debut album ‘An Awesome Wave’ last week, a record which already received the 2012 Mercury Prize - but after working on the soundtrack for ‘Leave to Remain’, it appears they may take a step away from their original style, and start taking on ‘interesting sonic landscapes’ when working on their second LP.

Keyboard player Gus Unger-Hamilton told The Sun:

“We’ve just finished the soundtrack for a British film called Leave To Remain by a director called Bruce Dickinson. The film is about asylum seekers in London. It follows three young people who try to seek safety in the UK. It’s sad, it’s life-affirming, it’s brilliant. The music is more free, there wasn’t the pressure to turn ideas into songs. So it allowed us to come up with interesting sonic landscapes and let them run.”

He continued on to talk about their next album, saying:

“We go in the studio this summer. We are very keen to work on the second proper album. Some songs have been started and almost finished. It’s feeling good. It’s been hard to write on the road because we don’t have access to our instruments. Maybe we’ll do a Futureheads and make an a cappella album.”
