MGMT Claim New Album Is "Less Paranoid And Distraught" Than 'Congratulations'

Tuesday, 02 July 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

American psych-rockers MGMT have opened up about their forthcoming eponymous new album - saying that it’s ‘less paranoid’ than their last album ‘Congratulations’.

The group release the record - their third - in September, and they seem to have taken a more relaxed approach to it than their 2010 album ‘Congratulations’ - which they described as "distraught, nervous, and paranoid".

They told NME:

“We’re feeling a little bit more at ease and ready to take whatever comes our way. First and foremost we feel like we’ve made a really good album that reflects who we are right now, which is a little bit less distraught, nervous and paranoid than we were three years ago. For lots of different reasons, 2010 was a wild ride for us.”

They continued:

“I would say that ‘Congratulations’ was a more paranoid album [than 'MGMT']. That was written coming off of a really intense run of touring and we didn’t really give ourselves any kind of a break, so the paranoia and lack of feeling that we were in control, I think that came across on ‘Congratulations’ a lot. The way that we wrote the music, it was intentionally uncomfortable. On the new album we wanted to make something that you could really sink into.”
