Former HMV Derry Owner Opens New Store - And Calls It HVM!

Thursday, 18 July 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

After HMV entered administration at the start of the year, the future of its dozens of UK and Ireland stores were left in doubt, and until it was offered a lifeline by Hilco, thousands of people were set to be out of a job. Some 132 were saved by Hilco’s £50million rescue package, but unfortunately for the people of Derry, they didn’t make the cut. But now, one former worker has decided to open his own music store there - and he’s named it HVM.

Tony Cregan was the former boss of the Derry HMV store, and has decided that although his job has gone, along with the whole shop, he’ll still be providing his fellow locals a place to browse and buy music in the same style as ever. According to Entertainment, he made the move after he realised that there was gap in the market now HMV had closed down - and a 15,000-strong petition confirmed that there was demand for a music store.

He told the site:

“We thought what is the point calling the new show Local CDs, or whatever, we'll just call it HVM. HMV is gone.”

Unsurprisingly, Hilco and HMV aren’t too happy with him, and sent him a letter saying the name is causing confusion - and that the "continued presence in the market of your business operating under the name HVM has caused and will continue to cause substantial damage to our client's reputation and goodwill".

Cregan didn’t agree, and has seen his store filled with customers and supporters since its opening. He replied to their letting, saying that "people are saying the vibe here is great, it's really friendly"But, rather than take on HMV, he decided to turn his HVM sign upside down - and it conveniently now spells WAH. Entertainment reports that people are supporting WAH “in their droves”.
