Pussy Riot Member Maria Alyokhina Denied Parole

Wednesday, 24 July 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Jailed Pussy Riot member Maria Alyokhina is to remain incarcerated, after her parole bid was denied by authorities.

Alyokhina is one of three members of the band that were jailed after a protest performance in a Moscow cathedral last year, and she was hoping to become the second to secure a release. But after her initial parole request was denied by a district court, the BBC reported that a regional court in Perm has dismissed her appeal.

Alyokhina recently embarked on a hunger strike in protest at the decision to refuse her the right to attend her own parole hearing. She is one of two Pussy Rioters - alongside Nadezhda Tolokonnikova - that are still imprisoned. Yekaterina Samutsevich was freed last October.
