Johnny Borrell's Debut Solo Album Sells Just 594 Copies In First Week

Tuesday, 30 July 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell released his debut solo album ‘Borrell 1’ last week to a fair amount of critical acclaim. However, according to NME, it sold just 594 copies in its first week.

Borell would have expected to make a much bigger impact on the charts with the release, with X Factor’s Jahmene Douglas selling over 19,000 copies of his debut album to land at Number 1.

‘Borrell 1’ was originally recorded on a four track recorder by Borrell and a group of musicians including Razorlight bass player Freddie Stitz, Brazilian saxophonist Joao Mello and Darren Berry. After debuting the songs live Borrell decided to re-record them in London with legendary producer Trevor Horn.

Speaking of the record, he said:

“Fred [Stitz, bassist] was in the last line-up of Razorlight. We were playing big shows, the every Monday night we'd play blues and tango at this underground club with a bunch of kids who were totally disenfranchised from the mainstream, just hanging out. The band grew out of that.”
