Nine Inch Nails to Release Two Different Masters Of New Album 'Hesitation Marks'

Thursday, 29 August 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

Industrial rock titans Nine Inch Nails will offer fans the chance to grab two different masters of their latest album ‘Hesitation Marks’.

The band have lined up a September 3 release for the new record, and have decided that they’ll offer their loyal fanbase the opportunity to purchase two different versions - a normal master, which is louder and more suitable to the majority of fans’ needs, and an ‘audiophile’ version which is tailored to those with ‘high-end equipment’.

Revealing the news via their Tumblr page, the band said:

“For the majority of people, the standard version will be preferable and differences will be difficult to detect. Audiophiles with high-end equipment and an understanding of the mastering process might prefer the alternate version.”

The standard version will be available via CD and digital retailers such as iTunes, while the audiophile version will be available to fans who buy any version of the record via their website. Alan Moulder, who mastered and mixed the album, has offered his opinion on the decision.

“The biggest issue in mastering these days tends to be how loud can you make your record. It is a fact that when listening back-to-back, loud records will come across more impressively, although in the long run what you sacrifice for that level can be quality and fidelity.

“So after much discussion we decided to go with two versions… The Audiophile Mastered Version is more true to how the mixes sounded to us in the studio when we were working on the songs. Have a listen, turn up the volume and enjoy the experience!”

Meanwhile, the band have also offered their fans the chance to stream the album in full for the week in the run up to its release. Available via iTunes (click here), the record features their three latest singles Copy of A (a free download), Came Back Haunted and Everything, as well as collaborations with Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham and bassist Pino Palladino.
