Electric Zoo Festival Cancelled Following Two Deaths

Monday, 02 September 2013 Written by Elliott Batte

New York’s massive Electric Zoo Festival was cut short over the weekend after two fans died of suspected drug overdoses.

Organisers decided to cancel the Sunday bill, which was set to  feature Diplo, Steve Aoki, and Sebastian Ingrosso amongst others, because of major health and safety concerns following the tragic death of two fans.

Four other attendees have been taken to hospital ‘critically ill’ and, according to a statement from New York officials, who worked with the festival’s organisers to ‘reduce health risks’, Electric Zoo was deemed too dangerous to continue.

The statement read:

“Due to serious health risks, the Electric Zoo music festival on Randall's Island on Sunday, September 1st has been cancelled. The City recommended cancellation and the event promoters have agreed.

"During the first two days of the Electric Zoo music festival, two concert-goers have died and at least four others became critically ill and have been placed in intensive care at area hospitals. Definitive causes of death have not yet been determined, however, both appear to have involved the drug MDMA (ecstasy, or molly).

“The Electric Zoo organisers have worked with City officials to reduce health risks at this event, but in view of these occurrences, the safest course is to cancel the remaining day of the event.”

Electric Zoo officials have also released a statement via their official website, sending their condolences to the loved ones of the two deceased and stating that there is nothing more important than the safety of their attendees.

“The founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend. Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today.”

Electric Zoo has grown into a huge event since its formation in 2009, offering fans a selection of the world’s best EDM artists over the Labor Day weekend. It’s the first time in its history that the event had to be cancelled.
