Devildriver - The Garage, Glasgow - April 6 2014 (Live Review)

Wednesday, 09 April 2014 Written by Heather McDaid

Had you been walking down Sauchiehall Street on this cold Sunday afternoon wondering what the queues were for, the mass of DevilDriver t-shirts would soon have given the game away. With their 2013 album 'Winter Kills' out long enough to not only be learned verbatim, but to be a favourite for many fans, the Californian metallers are In Glasgow to remind everyone exactly why they loyally return year after year.

First up, Bleed From Within kickstart the evening in front of their home crowd. Rarely are support slots played to a packed house, but this one is. Arrive just a couple of minutes in and you’re stuck behind a heaving mass of six-foot-something bodies.

Sylosis - stand in drummer and all - batter their way through a fleeting dalliance with Glasgow. Despite producing a completely solid wall of sound, they prove that they don't just slay with their harshest tracks. Even with the pace slowed a little, they are both thunderous and melodic.

Fronted, as per, by a kilted Dez Fafara, Devildriver don't waste much time with chat, instead opting for the kind of performance that sees more people atop the crowd than in it, and a pit wide enough to graze the walls.

Head On To Heartache ploughs forward with an energy that doesn't falter as they tear through Hold Back The Day and Not All Who Wander Are Lost. The foursome's penchant for an outside-the-box cover version never goes unnoticed, and their rendition of Awolnation's Sail is taken to new heights in a live setting.

Fafara’s early offer of a handshake if you can get to him is a challenge that sees fans clamber atop each other, while the Mad Crew security in front appear to be living their worst nightmare.

DevilDriver have always been a band who seem without ego - they do what they do and any success that comes with it is just a bonus. With this in mind, they don't need the staged final song and inevitable shouts for their return; they play from start to finish, lay it all out there and then call it a night.

Devildriver Upcoming Tour Dates are as follows:

Wed April 09 2014 - MANCHESTER Manchester Academy 2
Thu April 10 2014 - SOUTHAMPTON Mo Club
