Prince Has Two New Albums In The Pipeline, Was In Talks For Glastonbury

Tuesday, 24 June 2014 Written by Huw Baines

Prince has not one, but two new albums in the pipeline.

In addition to ‘Plectrum Electrum’, a record put together with his band, 3RDEYEGIRL, details have emerged of an as-yet-untitled solo album, which includes a duet with Rita Ora and a song inspired by an internet meme.

Writing in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Jon Bream recounted a late night visit and listening session at Prince’s Paisley Park:

“Engineer/producer Joshua Welton, husband of 3rdEyeGirl drummer Hannah Ford Welton, sat at the Studio B console, pushing the buttons. The long, opening tune, “The Gold Standard,” was percolating electro-funk, an update of classic Prince with a lyric that referenced the notions of “wild and rude” from his previous days. The second selection was a complex electronic discourse that was hard to grasp first time around.

“Suddenly, the phone rang. It was Prince. Via speaker phone, we chatted. He said he believed in albums, not singles: ‘I’ve finally got something that is a cohesive statement.’”

Meanwhile, Michael Eavis has confirmed that social media rumours derailed plans to have Prince headline Glastonbury. Answering a question from Henry Holland in the Guardian, he said:

“We wanted him to play, and it got to the point where his people were talking to us about him doing it, but before he confirmed he got really upset because he thought we had advertised that he was playing. We hadn't, but with social media, rumours get everywhere, and one of those rumours was that Prince was coming. So he didn't want to do it in the end. All the social media chit-chat now about who might be playing really doesn't help us.”
