Tacocat - Lost Time (Album Review)

Friday, 08 April 2016 Written by Laura Johnson

Tacocat may well be a band that you’ve never heard of, but they’re likely a band you won’t be able to be without once you have. ‘Lost Time’ is their third record, following up 2014’s ‘NVM’, and finds the Seattle quartet further investigating pop, both punk and culture.

With the album’s name inspired by The X-Files, it’s only fitting that Tacocat launch headfirst into indulging their sci-fi influences with opener Dana Katherine Scully, which blends pop-punk brilliance with tongue in cheek lyrics about frontwoman Emily Nokes’ personal hero. “‘Cos she’s the only one thinking it through, ‘cos she’s got the shoulder pads, no nonsense attitude,” she sings. “The truth is out there, but so are lies!”

Next up is FDP, which stands for first day period. It offers up the warning “FDP don’t fuck with me!” and will no doubt have women across the globe using it as an anthem for their menstrual woes.

But, putting bodily functions aside, Tacocat continue with I Love Seattle, the band’s love letter to their hometown, which comes backed by an infectious guitar riff and frantic bells.

The record’s lead single, I Hate The Weekend, seals the deal for ‘Lost Time’ being a contender for soundtrack of the summer, and is complete with a contagious singalong chorus driven by handclaps.

‘Lost Time’ isn’t breaking any musical moulds, but it’s a brilliantly charming record. With news of Tacocat recording the new Powerpuff Girls theme reaching people before they’ve caught up with their new record, some might dismiss them as vacuous pop-punks with nothing left to offer an already oversaturated scene. To do so would be incorrect and a damn shame.
