The Libertines' John Hassall Announces Debut Album With New Band The April Rainers

Thursday, 29 September 2016 Written by Laura Johnson

John Hassall, bassist for the Libertines, and his band, the April Rainers, have announced their debut LP.

'Wheels To Idyll' will arrive on November 25 through VAM Records. Discussing it, Hassall said:

“Much of the album is about travelling to the country to see my Granny as a child. It might not be a very rock ’n’ roll subject matter, but I reckon you can still make good pop songs out of it. Intercity 125 is about the train journey there, Sun in the Afternoon is about her and her house, and The Last Scene of Summer at the end of the album is about the melancholy train journey back home to London. The songs in the middle are like the adventures and experiences that happen in this Idyll. For example Ladybird…Waiting is about being a child and having a silent conversation with a ladybird in her garden  ‘you’ll find that I am willing and I’m able, so go ahead and fly up on the table. Or take a trip ‘cross my finger tip, the love I give is honest and stable’. My Two Wheels is about a crazy bike ride at night time in the summer, ‘my limbs are getting heavy but my heart beats like a kite, cycling through the summer city night’ I wrote that one with my poet friend Steev Burgess.”
