Weirds have shared a video for their new single, Phantom.
The track is cut from their debut album, 'Swarmculture', which will now be released on May 26 through Alcopop! Records, having been pushed back from May 12. Regarding the record's title, vocalist Aidan Razzall said:
“It was a very conscious decision to combine the two words to create 'Swarmculture'. It just seemed to encapsulate the world we wanted to create with this record. With the fact that Western culture is swarming towards a populist right, with people blaming others for parts of their lives that they're not happy with, calling for change before they even begin to think about whether the change will be good or not, we felt 'Swarmculture' reflected the world we live in. Everything swarms, whether it be a colony of ants or the corporate conglomerates. We definitely, and will continue to, try to keep music and politics separate but as any type of artist, you are definitely inspired and influenced by what is going on around you”
In a statement about the Phantom video, the band said:
"The video stands in stark simplicity. Taking inspiration from the K Foundations ‘Burn A Million Quid’, we burned an effigy of our debut album cover in unadorned surroundings. As they burnt a million pounds in cash to spark debate on worth of currency, we visualised the Phantom video with an element of catharsis. Our record ‘Swarmculture’ is a polished example of time, effort and passion, and to see its physical form brought down to ash and dust over the course of two and half minutes serves to deliver it into the world."
The Leeds psych-rock troupe will appear at the Great Escape later this month before embarking on a headline UK tour, which includes stops in Manchester, Cardiff, London, where they'll perform as part of Camden Rocks, Bristol, Leicester, Leeds, Glasgow, Newcastle and Hull. The band have also lined up sets at 2000trees, Truck Festival and LeeFest this summer.
