Steve Vai Lines Up Summer Release For 'Modern Primitive'

Tuesday, 16 May 2017 Written by Laura Johnson

Steve Vai will release 'Modern Primitive' as a standalone album this summer.

The record was originally a companion disc to his 25th anniversary resissue of 'Passion and Warfare', but will now be released in its own right on July 7 through his Favored Nations Entertainment label. It will mark the seventh instalment of his Secret Jewel Box set.

'Modern Primitive' features material that was written and recorded with Vai’s '80s band The Classified, which consisted of Tommy Mars on keyboards, Chris Frazier on drums, Stu Hamm on bass and Sue Mathis on vocals and keys. The guitarist completed it last year and the press release describes it as the "missing link that exposes the colossal growth period between 'Flex-Able' and 'Passion and Warfare'."

Discussing the album, Vai said:

“The music on Modern Primitive was written and recorded with virtually no expectations for its future. As a result, there was an opening up to a powerful and personal creativity that allowed me to find the most stimulation music I could conjure. So far it’s my favorite album that I ever made.”
