Gruff Rhys, Sweet Baboo And HMS Morris Named On Welsh Music Prize Shortlist

Gruff Rhys, Sweet Baboo and HMS Morris are among the acts shortlisted for this year’s Welsh Music Prize.

The Super Furry Animals frontman’s ’Set Fire To The Stars’ soundtrack will be pitted against 11 other LPs for the 2016-17 gong. Also in the running are Sweet Baboo, HMS Morris, Georgia Ruth, Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard and Baby Queens. Check out the full shortlist below. 

BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens, who created the prize with John Rostron, said:

“It’s been a strong year for albums in Wales. This shortlist reflects that and we can’t wait to find out which album the judges choose. The Welsh Music Prize has really grown in stature over the years and now we see international press and the music industry recognizing the title as an important and respected accolade.”

  • The Gentle Good - ’Ruins/Adfeilion’ (Bubblewrap)
  • Georgia Ruth - ’Fossil Scale’ ((Navigator Records))
  • Gruff Rhys - ’Set Fire To The Stars’ (Finders Keepers)
  • H Hawkline - ’I Romanticize’ (Heavenly Recordings)
  • HMS Morris - ’Interior Design’ (Waco Gwenci)
  • Kelly Lee Owens - ’Kelly Lee Owens’ (Smalltown Supersound)
  • Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard - ’Y Proffwyd Dwyll’ (New Heavy Sounds)
  • Sweet Baboo - ’Wild Imagination’ (Moshi Moshi Records)
  • Toby Hay - ’The Gathering’ (Cambrian Records)

The winner will be announced at a ceremony at Milk and Sugar in the Old Library, Cardiff on October 20. Last year’s prize went to Meilyr Jones for his debut solo album, ’2013’.
