Panic Shack, Melin Melyn, Adwaith And Gwenno Among Acts Shortlisted For Welsh Music Prize

Panic Shack (pictured), Melin Melyn, Adwaith, and Gwenno are among the acts shortlisted for this year's Welsh Music Prize.

In its 15th year, the award recognises the best in creativity from the growing Welsh music scene, as well as music made by Welsh people around the world, across genres from hip hop, rap and electronic music to folk, rock, punk and pop.

The shortlist includes 15 albums that were selected by jurors across the Welsh music scene, including Stereoboard's own Content Editor Laura Johnson, Sofia Ilyas (Chief Community Officer at Beatport Gallery), Roisin O’Connor (music editor for The Independent and host of the Good Vibrations podcast), Molly Palmer (DJ and BBC Radio Wales presenter), Zakia Sewell (BBC 6 Music presenter, DJ and writer), Natalia Quiros Edmunds (music journalist and artist manager at Arctic Monkeys and Fontaines D.C.'s management company, Wildlife Entertainment), Tim Jonze (associate editor, culture at the Guardian), and Caroline Cullen (Series Producer - Later…with Jools Holland/BBC Studios). Check out the shortlist below:

The winner of the £10,000 prize money will be announced at a ceremony held at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff on October 6 that will be hosted by Radio 1's Sian Eleri. The event will also be broadcast live on BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru, with a new TV highlights special airing on BBC One Wales to show off the best bits of the night.

Supported by the Welsh Government via Creative Wales, the ceremony forms part of Cardiff City Music Festival supported by the Welsh Government and Cardiff Council.

"For the 15th year running the Welsh Music Prize will celebrate these great albums in a special night," said Welsh Music Prize co-founder Huw Stephens. "We're very happy that everyone will get to see the night on BBC One Wales and Iplayer this year too. The longlist and subsequent shortlist of albums is a yearly reminder of the great music and albums from Wales."

Past winners include Kelly Lee Owens, Boy Azooga, Deyah, Gruff Rhys, and Gwenno. The 2024 prize went to Newport-born rapper and producer L E M F R E C K for his album 'Blood, Sweat & Fears'.
