Cancer Bats Surprise Release New Album 'The Spark That Moves'

Friday, 20 April 2018 Written by Laura Johnson

Cancer Bats have surprise released a new album.

'The Spark That Moves', which arrives via their own label, Bat Skull Records, was recorded with Propagandhi's JP Peters and produced by Eric Ratz, who also worked with the band on 'Hail Destroyer', 'Bears Mayors Scraps & Bones' and 'Dead Set On Living'. It follows up  2015's 'Searching For Zero'.

Speaking about the release, vocalist Liam Joseph Cormier said:

“We were just tired of waiting. We spent all of 2017 working hard on this album, all while playing shows and talking with our fans, who were constantly asking “when can we hear new music!?”. We figured why make anyone wait any longer, let’s just drop the entire new album all at once. I know as a fan, I just want to hear everything right away, let me buy the record right now!  We figured, why not release our own music the way we want.”

Later this month the Canadian quartet will play four London shows to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their sophomore album, 'Hail Destroyer'.

td#right {display:none !important;} Illustration: Samuel Davies There’s this great indie-rock song going around called Hope You Like Getting Old. It’s by the Seattle band Subways on the Sun and its video is full of stuff that used to clutter my shelves when I was a kid - a VHS copy of The Empire Strikes Back, an Optimus Prime figure, a lava lamp like the one my girlfriend got me for my 17th birthday. Watching it is to submit to that addictive, rose-tinted sadness that’s so hot right now. It’s Proust with power chords.

After all, why should we be impressed by the execution of dog-eared blueprints?
Deaf Havana - Rituals (Album Review)
Mon 20 Aug 2018
The intro to Deaf Havana’s ‘Rituals’ is a short ambient piece called Wake but, in truth, they might well have kicked things off with John Williams’ ominous theme music from the film Jaws. Having turned their back on everything that made them one of Britain’s finest young bands, the five piece have totally and utterly jumped the shark here.
