The Kinks have shared a previously unreleased track, Time Song.

It is one of many that will appear on the 50th anniversary edition of 'The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society', which is due out on October 26 through BMG.

Deluxe versions will feature even more extras, including sleeve notes, interviews, photography, and two essays on the album written by Pete Townshend and journalist Kate Mossman.

Although it never appeared on the record, the band performed the song at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane, London in January 1973 to celebrate Britain’s entry into the Common Market. Its lyrics fixate on the passing of time, while piano and acoustic guitar accompany its softly-sung vocals.

Ray Davies said:

‘When we played a concert at Drury Lane in '73 to "celebrate" us about to join what was called The Common Market, I decided to use the song as a warning that time was running out for the old British Empire. This song was recorded a few weeks later but never made the final cut on the Preservation Act I album. Oddly enough, the song seems quite poignant and appropriate to release at this time in British history, and like Europe itself the track is a rough mix which still has to be finessed."

The band will launch an exhibition at London’s Proud Central Gallery on October 4 called The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society. It will run until November 18 and include rare items, such as artwork by the band, vintage memorabilia and photographs from the period surrounding the album. Head here for further information.
