Roxette Singer Marie Fredriksson Dies Age 61

Tuesday, 10 December 2019 Written by Laura Johnson

Marie Fredriksson has died aged 61.

The vocalist for the Swedish pop-rock band Roxette passed away in the morning of December 9 as a result of an ongoing illness. In 2002 she was diagnosed with a brain tumour, though it's not clear if this was a contributing factor. In a statement (via The Independent), her family said:

"It is with great sadness that we have to announce that one of our biggest and most beloved artists is gone.

Marie Fredriksson died on the morning of 9 December in the suites of her previous illness.”

Fredriksson formed Roxette with Per Gessle in 1986 and they went on to release 10 albums together, the latest being 2016's 'Good Karma'. They are also extremely well known for the 1987 power ballad It Must Have Been Love.

Prior to Roxette, Fredriksson formed the punk group Strull in the late '70s. She also branched out for the first time as a solo artist in the early '80s, going on to record numerous records and tour under her own name.

Fredriksson's bandmate Per Gessle paid tribute to her via the band's Twitter account.
