Wednesday, 10 August 2022 Written by Laura Johnson

Lamont Dozier has died aged 81.

The news of the Motown legend's passing was shared by his son Lamont Dozier Jr via a post to his Instagram account of a picture of him and his father with a caption that read, "Rest in Heavenly Peace, Dad!". No cause of death was shared.

Dozier was born in Detroit in 1941 and became a singer, songwriter and record producer. He found success as part of the songwriting and production trio Holland–Dozier–Holland, completed by brothers Brian and Eddie Holland. Together they pioneered the Motown sound and wrote multiple hits for the stars of the '60s, including Martha and the Vandellas, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Four Tops, and The Isley Brothers.

Dozier's career also included compositions for artists such as Simply Red (Infidelity, Suffer, You've Got It, and Turn It Up), Phil Collins (Two Hearts), Joss Stone (Spoiled), and Debbie Gibson (Anything Is Possible), as well putting out music under his own name and with Holland-Dozier (with Brian Holland), The Romeos, The Voice Masters, Ty Hunter and The Voice Masters, and La Mont Anthony.

He received many accolades throughout his life, including numerous UK and US number one singles for songs he wrote, a Grammy Award for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television for Phil Collins' Two Hearts from the 1988 film Buster, and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Holland brothers in 1990, among others.

Since the news of Dozier's passing, tributes have poured in from music community, including heartfelt posts from Simply Red and Nile Rodgers.
