Prankster to Auteur: Five Pivotal Tyler, The Creator Performances

Tyler, the Creator’s evolution has been stark over the past decade. The Californian multi-hyphenate has risen from a troublesome shock value merchant to his current status as a fully-fledged auteur leading an evolutionary charge on hip-hop. His wide-ranging artistry, which now encompasses singer, producer, music video director, fashion designer and actor, has made him one of the most influential figures in alternative culture.
Alongside that, he’s also shown a propensity to light up stages around the globe in his own inimitable style. In the wake of his staggering seventh album ‘Chromakopia’, Tyler is about to hit the road for a colossal world tour, bringing Lil Yachty and Paris Texas with him, and we can’t wait to see where he goes with it.
Kicking off in Saint Paul, Minnesota on February 4, the huge 2025 trek will then head to Europe in the spring, including shows at Birmingham's Utilita Arena, the O2 Arena in London, Manchester’s Co-Op Live and Glasgow’s OVO Hydro, before further North American shows and dates in Australia and New Zealand.
In anticipation of all that, here we take a look at five of the most impressive and transformative performances from Tyler, the Creator’s career so far.
Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival 2024
The ‘Chromakopia’ era kicked off with one of Tyler’s best performances during his headline slot at his very own Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival. Appearing alongside more of the green shipping containers that had been dotted across the globe to promote the album, he performed in the green military uniform that has become synonymous with the record’s world. The setlist, meanwhile, was a trip through the album’s biggest moments — already sung back in full voice — accentuated by some older cuts that broke him, such as Yonkers, She and Who Dat Boy. His set capped a weekend that had already showcased Erykah Badu, Andre 3000, Doechii and Mustard, and was live streamed via Amazon Music, allowing fans from around the world to tune in to the sold out event, because it just had to be seen to be believed.
Odd Future at Wembley Stadium 2014
Tyler may have changed a lot as an artist, but his ambition has always been clear, particularly when we look back at his Odd Future days. When the rap group supported Eminem at Wembley Stadium, they did so in their trademark haphazard and hectic way. The setlist largely comprised Tyler’s own songs, such as Domo23 and Tamale, and situated him at the heart of the performance, even with the likes of Left Brain, Hodgy Beats and Jasper Dolphin on stage with him. That he’s now living up to those lofty expectations he was setting and playing massive venues on his own is testament to the force of nature he has become.
Coachella 2024
Stages don’t come much bigger than Coachella. When Tyler made his way out to the desert to headline the festival’s 2024 edition, though, he handily showed that he was more than up to the task. His two career-spanning performances were statements of intent, from jaw-dropping stage design to unapologetically bold setlists that included deep cuts like Odd Toddlers and AssMilk, alongside viral sensations like Dogtooth and WusYaName. A grocery list of guest stars, including Kali Uchis, Childish Gambino, Earl Sweatshirt and A$AP Rocky, also helped him put his unique stamp on the festival and made sure that people would pay attention to Tyler, the Creator, whether they were ready to or not.
Grammy Awards 2020
Not content with simply winning the 2020 Rap Album Grammy for ‘IGOR’, Tyler went for all out rap domination. His performance of EARFQUAKE and NEW MAGIC WAND was a show stopping triumph. Opening with the silky smooth vocals of R&B legends Charlie Wilson and Boyz II Men, Tyler was soon joined by a small army of clones before the stage erupted into flames, causing him to fall backward through the stage in a plume of smoke. Packing all the energy and hype of a full headline show into just five minutes and displaying the full range of Tyler’s artistry, this belongs in the conversation for best ever Grammy performances.
Lollapalooza 2021
For many attendees, Lollapalooza’s 2021 edition marked a return to live concerts and performances after Covid-enforced isolation. Tyler made up for lost time. A slew of songs from the recently-released ‘Call Me If You Get Lost’ were mixed in with some of Tyler’s deepest cuts (Bimmer hadn’t been played since 2016) resulting in a sprawling 23 song setlist that looked like a best of without the sense of past-it resignation. Costumes, characters and pyrotechnics all came together to make sure this was truly a show to remember under the twinkling lights of downtown Chicago.
