Shame will return later this year with a new album.
Helmed by Grammy-winning producer John Congleton, known for his work with artists like St. Vincent and Angel Olsen, 'Cutthroat' will arrive through Dead Oceans on September 5, following up 2023’s 'Food For Worms'. Vocalist Charlie Steen said:
"It’s about the cowards, the cunts, the hypocrites. Let’s face it, there’s a lot of them around right now. This is about who we are. Our live shows aren’t performance art – they’re direct, confrontational and raw. That’s always been the root of us. We live in crazy times. But it’s not about ‘Poor me.’ It’s about ‘Fuck you’."
As a preview, the London post-punks have shared the album's title track, which offers the band's fiery punk energy and intense style, while tackling themes of corruption and arrogance among societal issues.
"I was reading a lot of Oscar Wilde plays where everything was about paradox,” Steen explained. "In Cutthroat, it’s that whole idea from Lady Windermere’s Fan, ‘Life’s far too important to be taken seriously’.
"Cutthroat is a joyride. It’s for the inexperienced driver. The one who wants to go fast for no reason other than it’s fun. It’s driven by hunger. Hunger for something better. For something you’ve been told you don’t deserve.
“It’s primal. It’s raw. It’s unapologetic. It’s the person who turns up to the party uninvited. ’Cause when you’ve been pushed down, there’s nowhere to go but up. When you ain’t got nothing, you ain’t got nothing to lose.”
Head below to view the song's accompanying Ja Humby-directed video, which captures the band performing the song within a motorcycle wall of death.
Shame will support the LP with UK and European tour between September 28 and November 20, which includes shows in Southampton, Leeds, Dublin, Cork, Manchester, Glasgow, Bristol, Brighton and London, where they'll play the O2 Forum Kentish Town. Tickets go on general sale at 10am local time on Friday (June 6).
Ahead of the tour, they'll perform the album in full at a sold-out show at London's Brixton Jamm tomorrow (June 4). They'll also support Wunderhorse at Dublin's Wider Than Pictures concert series on August 19 and 20. Tickets are on sale now.
