Shame - Cutthroat (Album Review)

Monday, 15 September 2025 Written by Laura Mills

Shame’s ‘Cutthroat’ brings fierce, intense energy from the get-go, reinforcing the idea that the south London post-punks are a band unafraid to try new things.  Produced by John Congleton, whose oddball pop approach has been employed by everyone from St. Vincent to Mannequin Pussy, it’s a bold record that justifies their confidence.

The title track begins with a relentless, electrifying guitar riff that is alternatively piercing, sweet and satisfying. Charlie Steen’s lyrics demonstrate the band’s energy perfectly: they are relentless in their don’t give a fuck attitude, with his performance bringing in a Britpop elements as he echoes Damon Albarn on some classic-era Blur.

One of the most interesting things about Shame is their continued desire to deliver a wide range of different moods and feelings within their music.

Quiet Life is a lot more pared back then the explosive opener but the vocals are simply delicious, blending the delivery of Mark E Smith with something of Bob Dylan’s exquisite storytelling.

“Bright lights / Bitter streets / Spent too much time on my knees / Round here nothing's good for me / But I still can't make the choice to leave,” Steen sings, adapting Dylan’s approach to prop up an internal conversation with our own conscience.

The standout track, though, is Spartak, where a recurring theme of defiance and impenitence continues to fester. “When I saw you looking back at me / With those sunken eyes of scorn,” Steen sings, revealing something raw and personal before flipping to being more tongue-in-cheek. “I’ll only cast the first stone / If I’m sure that it will hit ya,” he spits, endearing despite it all. Shame have made another great record that leaves you guessing where they’ll go next.
