A special City Pop Waves all-dayer celebrating Japanese music will take place as part of London's inaugural Palace Bowl Presents series this summer.
Taking over Crystal Palace Bowl on August 7, the first-of-its-kind outdoor festival will be headlined by legendary guitarist, composer and producer Masayoshi Takanaka (pictured). There will also be appearances from jazz keyboardist Himiko Kikuchi, performing her 1987 album 'Flying Beagle' in full, and a DJ set from Ginger Root, with more acts still to be announced.
City Pop Waves is a series of shows highlighting City pop artists that previously saw Taeko Onuki make her first international appearance at The Wiltern in Los Angeles earlier this month, while ANRI is set to perform at The Wiltern and the Brooklyn Paramount in New York City in May.
Other headliners already confirmed for the Palace Bowl Presents series include Grace Jones, the Gospel Garden Festival featuring Kirk Franklin and Tasha Cobbs Leonard, Gary Numan, and co-headliners Bastille and The Wombats.
Before his new summer show, Takanaka, whose career spans over five decades, will embark on his first world tour, City Pop Waves: Super Takanaka World Live 2026, stopping at London's O2 Academy Brixton for two sold-out shows on March 31 and April 1. He'll also perform in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles, followed by dates in Australia and New Zealand in April.
Tickets for his new City Pop Waves show go on general sale at 10am on Friday (February 27). All other dates are on sale now.
Takanaka released his debut album 'Seychelles' in 1976 and quickly became a leading figure in Japan’s fusion and instrumental music scene. More recently, he has put out a number of reissues and compilation records.
