The Anchoress has returned with details of her third studio album.
The two-time Welsh Music Prize-nominated artist, real name Catherine Anne Davies, will release 'As We Once Were' on August 7 via her new label home, Last Night From Glasgow. It follows 2021's 'The Art Of Losing', its 2022 expanded edition and her 2023 covers album 'Versions'.
Alongside the news, the multi-instrumentalist and producer has shared the record's first single, I Had a Baby Not a Lobotomy, a satirical synth-pop offering featuring vocals from Welsh Music Prize-winning Welsh-Cornish artist Gwenno. Inspired by the comments she faced after becoming a mother, Davies described ths song in a new interview with NME as, "a tongue-in-cheek litany of all the stupid things people said to me when I had a baby," before adding it serves as, "an anthem for anyone who has ever been written off for daring to procreate."
About themes on the album, she said: "So much of this record was born out of the early years of my daughter’s life, and I really wanted to collect together and call out all of the clichés, stereotypes and dumb shit that people say to women who’ve had babies that I had encountered myself."
The Anchoress has also announced a one-off album launch show at London's 100 Club on August 22, with an early "parent-friendly" 10pm curfew. Tickets are on sale now.
