Daddy Yankee, real name Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez is a reggaeton singer, songwriter, actor, rapper, and record producer from Puerto Rico. Initially starting out life with aspirations to become a professional baseball career, he turned to music after being shot in the leg.
Often considered a pioneer in the genre, he first appeared on DJ Playero's 1992 Mixtape, 'Playero 34', with the song So' Persigueme, No Te Detengas. His first official studio project as a solo artist was 'No Mercy', released in 1995, but he soon moved away from the traditional model of rap and set his sights on reggaeton - one of the first artists to do so.
After his first album, he went on to release ten more records and EPs by 2013. His most famous singles was the internationally acclaimed 2004 hit Gasolina, until 2017, when his collaboration with Luis Fonsi, Despacito, gained huge global success. It became the first Spanish-language song to hit number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 since Macarena in 1996, and hit a billion biew on YouTube in less than 100 days.
Its success led Daddy Yankee to become the most listened artist worldwide on the streaming service Spotify in June 2017, being the first Latin artist to do so. He's won many awards too: 82 wins from 270 nominations since his rise to international fame in 2004, including five Grammys. What a career!
Now, Daddy Yankee is set to head to London's SSE Arena Wembley for a massive headline show in August. Catch him live by checking out the concert ticket information below on Stereoboard.
