The club united Peterborough and Fletton United Football Club, founded in 1923. The Fletton area is on the south side of the River Nene, where the London Road football ground is situated. The team have played their home games at London Road since their formation. They're known throughout the world of football as The Posh, one of the more unusual nicknames in English football. It was first coined in 1921, before Peterborough United were formed, with Pat Tirrell, manager of Fletton United, was reported to say he was "Looking for posh players for a posh new team." The club have a long-standing rivalry with both Northampton Town, with whom they contest the Nene derby, and Cambridge United, with whom they contest the Cambridgeshire derby.
