Portsmouth were founded in 1898 by John Brickwood, owner of the local brewery, as chairman. Frank Brettell was the club's first manager.
The club have always played at Fratton Park. They have won the FA Cup twice; in 1939 and 2008, the FA Charity Shield once in 1949, and the Football League Cup once in 2019. They were crowned champions of England in 1949 and 1950. The club is known as Pompey, and uniquely are the only football club ine English professional football which is not located on the mainland of the United Kingdom, as the club and the city of Portsmouth are both built on Portsea Island. The South Coast Derby is contested between Portsmouth Football Club and their rivals Southampton Football Club.
