Rick Astley is an English pop singer-songwriter from Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside. Starting his music career in 1985, he gained his first hit with Never Gonna Give You Up, which spent five weeks at the top of the British chart and became the year's highest-selling single, as well as a #1 hit in 25 countries.
He released his debut album, ‘Whenever You Need Somebody’ in 1987, which hit #1 in the UK Albums Chart. ‘Hold Me in Your Arms’ came out the following year, with ‘Free’ being released in 1991, and ‘Body & Soul’ in 1993, before Astley quit the music industry.
He returned in 2001 with the album ‘Keep It Turned On’, and followed this up with a greatest hits album in 2002, and then the album, ‘Portrait’ in 2005. He re-rose to prominence in 2007, after Never Gonna Give You Up became the subject of an internet meme known as the ‘Rickroll’. He released his latest album, ‘50’, in June 2016 via BMG, which he toured over the UK and Europe.
After touring his Beautiful Life tour around the UK and Europe in summer and autumn 2018, Rick Astley is among the names confirmed for Kew The Music and Mouth of the Tyne Festival, as well as a Racecourse show at Haydock Park in July 2019.
