Swindon Town Football Club was founded by Reverend William Pitt in 1879. They first became known as Spartans in 1880 before settling on the name Swindon Town in 1883.

In 1969, the club won the Football League Cup for the first and only time in their history. They've played their home matches at the County Ground, currently known as the Energy Check County Ground for sponsorship purposes, since 1896.

Fans consider Oxford United to be their main rivals. Less fierce rivalries exist with Reading, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, and Cheltenham Town.
