The Blades are a new wave and power pop band from Dublin, formed in the late 1970s. Made up of Paul Cleary, his brother Laurence and Pat Larkin upon inception, the band has now expanded in a big way, consisting of Paul Cleary, Brian Foley, Jake Reilly, Conor Brady, Pat Fitzpatrick, Frank Duff and Paul Grimes. Phew!
As uncompromising as they were gifted as pop songwriters, the original line-up released two seven inch singles: Hot For You and Ghost of a Chance, the latter of which they performed on The Late Late Show in 1981. They reshuffled their line up later that year, and after signing to the Irish label Reekus in 1982, began to gain some recognition. By 1985, they released the albums 'The Last Man In Europe' and 'Raytown Revisited 1980-85'. After breaking up, the band members each forged separate careers, Cleary continuing with the Partisans, and later the Cajun Kings, as well as solo material. Pat Larkin was later with The Peridots, and Brian Foley with the Mountain Climbers and The Harvest Ministers. They reformed in 2013, and began working on new material together in 2015, in the form of the 'Smalltime' EP. The Blades have announced a headline Dublin show for December 2022.
