The BBC Sports Personality of the Year is an awards ceremony that takes place annually in December.
Devised by Paul Fox in 1954, it originally consisted of just one, the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award. Several new awards have since been introduced, and currently eight awards are presented including Team of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, and newcomer and overseas categories. For the inaugural BBC Sportsperson of the Year award, 14,517 votes were cast and Christopher Chataway beat fellow athlete Roger Bannister in 1954. Nowadays, the event changes the city it takes place in ever year. Recent winners include Geraint Thomas, Mo Farrah, Roger Federer and Jessica Ennis-Hill.
