ImageR.E.M are set to return to the studio later this year to begin work on their new album.

The rock veterans have been taking a year off after an hectic previous 3 years, when they released their hits album 'In Time' and last album 2004's 'Around The Sun'.

The band also played 2 massive world tours in that time. Drummer Bill Rieflin has disclosed that they want to get back in the studio before the year is out.

He told Billboard: "The band's on hiatus. The idea at the end of the last tour, which ended in July, was really to take a year off, without having to even think about it."

"There was a three-year period of quite intense work, [so this is] some needed time off. There's some discussion about cranking things up in autumn, maybe winter."
