The Libertines guitarist and vocalist, Carl Barat, has revealed details about a warm up gig, set to take place in at London’s Forum venue in August ahead of the band’s show at the next month’s Reading and Leeds festival.
Speaking to BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat, Barat also announced that the band have not played together since they announced their return at a London press conference back in March. “It’s always a bit last minute with the Libertines. If we did it any other way it wouldn’t be the Libertines.”
Returning after a six-year hiatus, the Libertines have not yet confirmed a date for their festival warm-up show. Not that Barat seems to be any particular rush; he also explained how calm he and the band are about their preparations. “We’ve got a bit of time blocked out. As I say it’s a bit last minute – it always is. Of course we’ll be able to do it and we’ll be able to do it with aplomb.”
The reunion of the quartet at this year’s Reading and Leeds festival has been much-anticipated, with questions being asked as to just how things will go for the group once they get on stage.
Talking about the return, Barat said, “Obviously, it’s always nerve-racking, but again that’s all part of what it is to be in that band. Overall I’m excited, and that’s starting to come through a lot more now. It started off as pure nerves. Now I’m starting to look forward to it.”
Could this be the start of the Libertines next chapter? Remaining tight-lipped about the band’s plans following their festival appearance, Barat simply said, “We’ll have to wait to see, hey?”
The Libertines will play the Leeds festival on Friday August 27th and the reading festival on Saturday August 28th.
