John Lydon: 'Gorillaz Are Sh*t'

Never a man to keep his opinions to himself, fiery-tempered John Lydon has revealed his thoughts towards cartoon pop band Gorillaz, simply describing the group as “shit”.

Talking to NME.com just before performing with current band Public Image Ltd at Spain’s Benicassim festival last weekend, in a video interview the punk icon explained how he thought Damon Albarn’s band lacked originality and a lot of today’s music is a “melange of shit”.

Before taking to the stage Lydon said, “I really don’t wanna talk about shit like the Gorillaz, you know what I mean? Come on, I’m the originator – don’t toss us with that.” I guess that must be the reason why he turned down an offer to work with Gorillaz on their 2010 ‘Plastic Beach’ album!

Continuing to launch into an attack on modern-day music, he added, I think there’s less original talent now than 30 years ago. It’s much more manufactured. And the shame is I opened so many doors for so many people and they’ve all foolishly slammed it behind them. So what you get now is a melange of shit.”

As previously reported, Lydon’s performance fronting Public Image Ltd at Benicassim ended very bizarrely following an on-stage rant from the singer that led to his band walking off stage.
