Mike Skinner Says He’s 'Too Old' for The Streets

Tuesday, 11 January 2011 Written by James Conlon

Mike Skinner has discussed his decision to leave The Streets name behind after his forthcoming fifth studio album. Speaking on BBC Radio One, the songwriter said that he felt that writing and recording under the same name wouldn’t have the same effect as he got older.

The Birmingham-born artist said that he wanted to “do something else”, declaring that "I don’t want to be singing ‘Let's Push Things Forward’ when I'm 40.” The singer went on to joke about dance veterans Daft Punk, stating that if he had opted for a stage costume the situation might have been different: "If I'd have put on a helmet like Daft Punk - sometimes I think I should have - those guys can go on forever. They're going to be 60, and under that helmet they could be 23."

Skinner, who recently announced the tracklisting for his latest album, ‘Computers And Blues’ (Due for release on February 7th) went on to confirm that after touring the album he will move on to produce his debut film. However, it would appear that the singer has very specific aims: "It's not going to be a blockbuster," he said.

Skinner has been reluctant to talk about his decision to leave behind The Streets moniker, however he recently opened up in an interview with The Guardian. He said: "I've been doing it for 10 years and I've always tried to do something different with each album. Some [of my work has] been amazingly received and some of it hasn't been, and I've run out of new avenues."

He also went on to explain that the decision to write five albums as The Streets came about because of his record deal stipulations: "I signed a five-album deal, so the economics of the Streets really shaped it as much as my inspiration. It would be silly to end the Streets on the fourth album and then make another just to satisfy a deal, or to do six albums and do five of them on Warner and one of them independently. So it's part of the economics of my business and part of getting to that point."
