U2 Confirmed As Final Glastonbury Headliner

Quite possibly the worst kept secret in music was finally confirmed last night by Glastonbury festival when they announced U2 as the Friday night headliner for this years Pilton farm festival in June. Scheduled to headline Friday at last years event, the Irish rockers had to cancel their performance due to Bono injuring his back. They were replaced late by Damon Albarn’s Gorillaz who received mixed reviews. The Edge did make an appearance though, guesting in Muse’s Saturday headline set when they covered U2’s ‘When The Streets Have No Name’ as part of their encore.

Bono made it clear how disappointed he was at the time, having even written song he planned to debut at the festival, simply titled ‘Glastonbury’ and the suggestions were clear from as far back as August that they would be keen to honour their commitment this year.

One of the biggest bands in the World over the last 30 years it’s a surprise to most that they haven’t played the site before and it will be interesting to see what type of set they play without the ability to have the usual elaborate stage set up they use on their huge World tours.

During last night’s NME awards, The Edge made a video appearance following Glastonbury winning the ‘best festival’ gong saying "I have to say there is something really special and iconic about that stage. So, we're all looking forward to coming back to pick up where I left off. We're so excited to get to play in front of the world's greatest festival audience. We'll see you there!"

Coldplay and Beyonce Knowles have been confirmed previously as Saturday and Sunday headliners respectively. The full line up is likely to be announced around the end of March.
