Foals Discuss Joy At Ivor Novello Nomination

Foals singer Yannis Philippakis has expressed his joy at being nominated in the coveted Ivor Novello awards, describing the accolade as a 'really good feeling'.

The band’s 2010 track ‘Spanish Sahara’ has been nominated for ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’, competing with ‘Becoming a Jackal’ by Villagers and ‘MY KZ, UR BF’ by Everything Everything.

Speaking to Gigwise, Philippakis described his elation at being up for the award: “It’s a really great award because the title is Best Song Musically and Lyrically and not many awards really have that lyrical element. I definitely feel lyrics aren’t generally given enough credence, so this feels very good.”

He continued: “It’s also nice because you get nominated by your peers and other writers, rather than it being just some random industry people. It’s not a case of men in suits controlling everything.”

The 56th Ivor Novello Awards are set to take place at Grosvenor House hotel in London on May 19th. Other acts up for awards include Bombay Bicycle Club, Katy B, Plan B (who has been nominated in two categories), Tinie Tempah and The XX.
