U2 To Be Targeted By Protestors At Glastonbury

After having to pull out of last year's Glastonbury with a serious injury, it looks like Bono might have another pain coming at this year's festival after protest group Art Uncut targeted the band’s headline performance as a place to highlight U2’s alleged “tax evasion”.

Reports in The Guardian contained the following comments from a spokesman for the group, which is linked with UK Uncut.

"Bono claims to care about the developing world, but U2 greedily indulges in the very kind of tax avoidance which is crippling the poor nations of this world.”

“We will be showing the very real impact of U2's tax avoidance on hospitals and schools in Ireland. Anyone watching will be very much aware that Bono needs to pay up."

These views come after the band were widely criticised in 2006 after they shifted a large section of it’s business affairs out of their native Ireland and to the Netherlands following the implementation of a cap on generous tax breaks for artists who were based in the republic.

However, sources close to the band insist that each of the band live in Ireland as well as providing employment while remaining involved in various local charities.

A spokesperson for One, the anti-poverty campaign group which was co-founded by Bono, said: "U2's business arrangements have nothing to do with illegal tax evasion and transfer mispricing in developing countries, critical issues which Bono and One campaign on.

"One is currently lobbying for radical changes in the law that would require extractive industry corporations to report payments to governments, to ensure these substantial resources contribute to the domestic tax base instead of being stashed or siphoned off."

U2 will headline the Pyramid stage on Friday night at this year's Glastonbury festival. Coldplay and Beyonce will headline Saturday and Sunday respectively.
