Government Plan To Put Restrictions On Risqué Music Videos

Monday, 06 June 2011 Written by James Conlon

Overly-sexual pop videos could face restrictions or even be banned from broadcast on television under government plans set to be revealed next week. The scheme is set to attribute music videos with cinema-style 15 or 18 ratings, meaning that certain promos will not allowed to be broadcast until after the watershed at 9pm.

The scheme is part of a set of proposals made by the government as a move to counteract the supposed over-sexualisation of children in modern Britain. Other areas affected by the scheme include high street shops, who will face a fine for making suggestive clothing available to their child demographic.

The report will limit the broadcast of suggestive behaviour at a time when young people may be watching. It is believed that the report will not attempt to restrict such actions in live performances.

Although there have been no direct accusations as-of-yet, some are already pointing to videos such as Rihanna’s ‘S&M’ and Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ as inspiration for the attempted change to legislature. There have been a number of high-profile complaint cases in the last 12 months concerning overly-sexual performances, one of the most notable being performances on the ‘X Factor’ live finals from both Rihanna and Christina Aguilera.

The proposals are also expected to call for greater restrictions on billboard advertising, banning adverts using sexual images from sites near schools.
