Coldplay have replied to claims that their recent single 'Every Teardrop is a Waterfall' is copy of famous 90s dance track ‘Ritmo De La Noche’.
Despite receiving generally positive reviews of the song when it was unveiled last Friday (June 3rd), listeners have been quick to draw comparisons between the two tracks on YouTube and social networking sites.
Chris Martin was keen to put an end to the plagiarism claims, issuing a statement on the band’s website which confirmed that Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson received writing credits on the track. The duo’s song 'I Go to Rio' was sampled in the official release of 'Ritmo De La Noche'.
Speaking on the band’s official site, Chris Martin said: "'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' contains elements of 'I Go To Rio' written by Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson."
In a separate statement, a spokesperson for the band described the inspiration behind the lively track. They said: "Chris was inspired to write the song after watching the film ‘Biutiful’ by Alejandro Gonzalez. In the film, there is a nightclub scene - during which a track is playing in the background, based on 'I Go To Rio' by Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson. As a result, Allen and Anderson are also credited as writers on 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall'."
Coldplay are scheduled to headline this year’s Glastonbury festival at Worthy Farm. You can listen to their recent single ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’ below:
