Bon Iver Vs Lady Gaga For This Week’s UK Number One

Thursday, 23 June 2011 Written by James Conlon

It’s a feat that was probably hard to imagine as he cried his way through two boxes of Kleenex a day in a Wisconsin cabin, but Bon Iver is squaring up to Lady Gaga for the Number One spot in the UK album charts, according to midweek figures.

The figures reveal that Justin Vernon’s band, who released its eponymous second LP earlier this week, have surprised the betmakers by being just 1,000 copies away from Gaga’s eccentric-as-ever ‘Born This Way’.

The sales peak marks a big change from Bon Iver’s heartfelt debut ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’, which peaked at Number 42 in the UK album charts despite containing such critically acclaimed tracks as ‘Blood Bank’, ‘For Emma’ and the much-covered ‘Skinny Love’.

You can stream Bon Iver’s sophomore release in its entirety here, and read Stereoboard’s Rhys Morgan’s review of the record here.

Other albums looking set to end up in this week’s top ten are Adele’s '19' and '21' (surprise, surprise) and Take That's extended release 'Progressed'.

Meanwhile, in the UK singles chart Jason Derulo is on course to earn his second Number One with 'Don't Wanna Go Home'. Current figures would mean he knocks Example’s 'Changed The Way You Kissed Me' from the top spot down to second place.
