Stereoboard Tour of the Week – Rammstein - Tickets Onsale Friday 9am

Thursday, 07 July 2011 Written by Rob Sleigh

If a spectacular live show is what you’re after, you can forget about U2 and Muse and instead check out a performance by German industrial metallers Rammstein. Fans of the Berlin-based sextet will be able to confirm that, if you want to get your money’s worth from a gig, then you can do no better than to check out a Rammstein concert, which has everything you could possibly ask for in an action-packed live show – fire, fire and more fire. Obviously, there’s a few songs thrown in there as well, but mainly, there’s the fire. That’s right, Rammstein aren’t known for pulling any punches when it comes to pyrotechnics. An average night on the band’s tour will feature enough fireballs and flamethrowers to give the front rows a half-decent tan – and that’s when the group members aren’t on fire themselves.

After a headlining performance at last year’s Sonisphere festival, Rammstein have announced a new UK tour for next spring, kicking off at London’s O2 Arena on 24th February. The German band aren’t known for doing things by halves, so if you’re hoping to check them out at one of their forthcoming shows for the first time, expect lights, lasers, bizarre costumes and a whole host of other outrageous theatrics. Did I mention the fire as well?

The tour will take place to support the band’s forthcoming compilation album ‘Made in Germany 1995-2011’. It will be the first ‘Best of’ Rammstein album released to date and is expected out later this year. The band recently announced the first leg of the tour, which will take place in November and December throughout mainland Europe. Their newly-announced British dates will make up part of the second leg of the tour, which will continue in Spring 2012.

Rammstein were formed in Berlin in 1994 and named themselves after the German town of the same name, which was also the location of an airshow disaster that occurred in 1988. The incident remains the second-deadliest of its kind and was commemorated by the band in their signature track from their 1995 debut album ‘Herzeleid’. Following the album’s release, the German music press coined the term Neue Deutsche Härte (new German hardness) to categorise the band’s own brand of industrial metal. A number of other German acts have since joined the genre, having been influenced by Rammstein’s sound.

Following the release of the band’s sixth and most recent album ‘Liebe ist für alle da’ (German for ‘Love is for Everyone’) in 2009, Rammstein had sold over 15-million records worldwide, although it is for their spectacular and often bizarre live shows that they have become most well-known. Their five most recent albums have each been greeted with international success and have also all made it to Number One in their native Germany. ‘Liebe ist für alle da’ saw the band receive their most widespread recognition to date, reaching Number One in five countries in Europe and making it into the Top 20 in both the UK and the US.
