Monkees Deny Substance Abuse Reason For US & Canada Tour Cancellation

American pop veterans were forced to cancel their 45th anniversary tour yesterday – and today angrily denied rumours that the tour was called off because of drug abuse.

The band, which formed way back in 1966, had already travelled around various countries including the UK among other as part of their anniversary tour. But the trio had apparently not been properly informed about the impending dates and have decided to abandon the remaining shows which were scheduled to continue into September.

The band originally told fans via Facebook of the cancellations, citing no reason for the withdrawals. The statement read: “It has been determined that the remainder of The Monkees 2011 tour has been cancelled. No reason has been given at this time... We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your continued support of The Monkees.”

But after reports circulated that the dates were cancelled to allow member Micky Dolenz to attend rehab, a spokesperson quickly addressed the public to announce that these rumours were not true.

“Management had booked a number of dates with the venues without running them by the group first... so we had to cancel the remaining dates. Micky is disappointed but his solo tour is still going strong for the rest of the year. It has nothing to do with any sort of substance abuse whatsoever.”
