PJ Harvey Favourite To Win 2011 Mercury Music Prize Tonight

Dorset-based singer-songwriter and musician PJ Harvey has been hotly tipped as the favourite to win the 2011 Barclaycard Mercury Prize for Album of the Year.

PJ, a.k.a Polly Jean, is 6/4 with the bookies for her latest album ‘Let England Shake’ to take home the prize, which would make her the first ever candidate to win the award twice after 2001’s ‘Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea’.

But, she’s got stiff competition for the award in the form of Adele’s ‘21’, which was top of the UK albums chart for eleven weeks, and James Blake’s eponymous album, which sits on odds of 5/1. Interestingly, relatively small-time album ‘Diamond Mine’, by King Creosote and Jon Hopkins, had its odds from an unlikely 40/1 to 10/1. William Hill spokesman talked about the change of odds:

“The Judges have produced a number of surprise winners in recent year, Anthony and The Johnsons and Speech Debelle to name a few. Over the weekend we have seen significant gambles on King Creosote and Jon Hopkins, who our punters think could be the dark horse this year.”

Nominees for the award include Anna Calvi’s self-titled album, Metronomy’s ‘English Riviera’, Ghostpoet’s new effort ‘Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam’, ‘Man Alive’ by Everything Everything, Katy B’s debut ‘On a Mission’, ‘Build a Rock Boys’ from Elbow, Tinie Tempah’s ‘Disc-overy’ and Gwilym Simcock’s LP ‘Good Days at Schloss Elmau’. The winner is announced tonight.
