Pigeon Detectives - Lost (Single Review)

As Coldplay once sang, “Just because I’m losing, doesn’t mean I’m lost…”

ImageHowever, the above lyric Chris Martin and co’s equally-titled 'Lost', fits Leeds’ starlets The Pigeon Detectives, pretty well as three years ago they were the nations indie darlings. They went and headlined (and sold out) Leeds Millennium Square (amongst other mid-size venues), and entertained tens of thousands of people. Then they went away and the public pretty much forgot about them. Now, they’re trying desperately hard to recapture past glories with worrying results.

I could just make fun of the band, but that would be breaking my remit of being an objective and honest reviewer, and it wouldn’t be fair either, especially since this song isn’t…..actually…….bad.

Usually what happens, when a band that was popular, goes away for a while, and then suddenly their new album’s on the shelves at HMV without anyone noticing, that’s the sign that no-one is aware of your existence anymore. Now it’s time to really work your rear off and get yourself back up there without being annoying, and, well, they are The Pigeon Detectives.

The band haven’t lost any of that infectious energy that they showcased in the most shameless of fashions their 2006 debut 'Wait for Me', but what they have done, if 'Lost' is anything to go by, is mature a little. I know that when a band gets to their third album they can’t continue being snotty and overbearing, but usually that results in a band then becoming boring instead.

'Lost' isn’t boring.

To clarify further, it’s certainly not the greatest three minutes ever to embrace my ears but I was expecting so, so much worse than this. The verses are simple and interesting, the chorus has a catchy hook, and the whole thing is pieced together very well. I can’t really say anything’s physically wrong with it. Of course, there being “nothing wrong” with a song doesn’t make it an epiphany of music, and it certainly lacks the outright raw power that made their earlier singles such a huge success. There is something missing I can’t put my finger on, and that awful and out of place (and thankfully short) guitar solo towards the end wasn’t it.

It’s so easy to write the Pigeon Detectives off, and seeing as the third album 'Up Guards and At ‘Em' has been out for ages with minimal impact, you can’t blame them for trying. Not lost yet, shall we say?
