Damon Albarn's New Band Settle On Name

Blur and Gorillaz icon Damon Albarn has started a new band with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist flea and Nigerian drumming expert Tony allen – and has revealed that they’ll call themselves ‘Rocketjuice and the Moon’.

The news comes just days before the band plays their first live show together, in London’s Barbican tomorrow (29th), as part of ‘Another Honest Jon's Chop Up!’. The band will also be releasing their debut album soon, apparently to be released early on next year. The first album will be self-titled.

When asked by the Irish Times where the origin of band’s name came from, Albarn admitted that none of them even came up with the name.

“The stuff that I’m going to be playing on these shows with Tony and Flea is from this record we’ve been making, Rocketjuice and The Moon,” Albarn explained. “Someone in Lagos did the sleeve design and that’s the name he gave it, which suits me because trying to find a name for another band is always tricky.”

He continued to talk about the planning of their first shows together. “We’ve got a very loose plan, but it will all be rehearsed by the time we start,” he says. “We’ll be in a nervous but musical state of mind when we get to Cork.

“The rehearsals feel good, exciting. The plan is simple, really – to make some music, some interesting sounds. We’ve interesting people playing from all over the place. We’ve got Fatoumata Diawara from Mali, for example, and she’s just put out a record on World Circuit.”
