REM Ensure Fans That Split Was 'Not About Bruised Egos'

After 31 years in the industry, REM’s Mike Mills has ensured the fans that there was no acrimonious dispute to the band’s denouement.

With the legendary Oasis splitting in a public dispute that was both petulant and spiteful, REM remain positive that this was not the case for them.

Mills, the base player from the group, has stated that the decision to finally call it quits after so long was purely their decision with no outside interfering.

Mills said: “We are far too stubborn to do anything we’re told to.”

The guitarist went on to converse and confirms the fact that the group are rebellious and insubordinate by stating: “If it ever looked like we ought to break up because of internal problems, or external, that was always an incentive to carry on and work it out.”

Like all good musicians, they can admit when their time is up and they can no longer produce the high quality of music they are expected to.

Despite their last two albums being successful, having to downsize their Millennium Stadium gig in Cardiff after a poorly attended show at Twickenham, the band knew they would have to call it quits soon.

“We really started looking at ourselves during the 2008 tour and thought we had some decisions to make.”

But they insist there were no bruised egos, adding: “As a human being, you feel those things. You have to stop sometime. We’re as on top as we could be after 31 years, we’re all happy and content in our personal lives and with each other, so why not underline the career right now and say, this is it!”

REM’s greatest hits ‘Part Lies, Part Truth, Part Heart, Part Garbage 1982-2011’ is out now.
