Metallica Manager Swayed By 'Profitable' Euro

There’s nothing more rock and roll than dedicating an album to your fans and declaring that you never make music just for the money. And there aren’t many (if any) bigger rockers than Metallica. So, it’s strange to see their manager come forward and openly admit that his band would be playing more shows in Europe – because the Euro is weak.

Manager Cliff Burnstein spoke out to the Wall Street Journal to admit that the struggling Euro, which will be less powerful than the dollar, was influencing his decision to play more gigs in Europe next year – as they’ll be more ‘profitable’ for the band.

“I'm not an economist, but I have a degree, so it helps,” Burnstein said. “You have to ask yourself, what's the best time to be doing what, when and where.

“Over the next few years, the dollar will be stronger and the euro weaker, and if that's the case, I want to take advantage of that by playing more of these European shows now, because they will be more profitable for us.

“We're a U.S. export the same way Coca-Cola is. We look for the best markets to go to. Right now Indonesia is on my watch list.”

The move isn’t likely to please many fans – especially after Burnstein also admitted that he’d bring forward European dates for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who he also manages, for the same reason.

Metallica are set to play through one of their most seminal albums, ‘The Black Album’, at Donnington’s Download Festival next year, alongside Black Sabbath and The Prodigy.
