'I've Forgotten How To Write A Hit Single' Says Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner

Arctic Monkeys’ vocalist and frontman Alex Turner has claimed he has ‘forgotten how’ to write a hit single – and that he is just ‘getting there with the singing thing’.

The Sheffield-born singer-songwriter has managed to earn himself to #1s and five tracks within the Top 5 with the Monkeys, but they were all released from the years 2005-2007 – and since then, he hasn’t managed a single in the top 10. And, though he may have managed to get all four Arctic Monkeys albums to #1 in the Albums Chart, his last three single releases have hit #28, #167 and #149 respectively.

When talking about his track-writing by tabloid paper The Sun, Turner said: “I have fucking forgotten how to do that… I don't know what that is any more, it's a different landscape these days.”

He continued on to talk about his singing ability, saying: “I was never a singer. I have had to practice at that and writing melodies is something that didn't come naturally. I was more comfortable writing lyrics. I am still working on it but I think we are getting there with the singing thing.”

Maybe Alex could get some help from the University of Bristol – where scientists have claimed to have cracked the code for writing a successful track.
